JJ Lopez

Broadcasting Professional

As a broadcasting professional, JJ has devoted the last 10 years of his career to non-commercial radio and public media at Trinity University’s KRTU-FM 91.7. In 2007, he began hosting the Diggin Deep Soul Shakedown, a weekly soul and jazz radio show. He has interviewed numerous musicians, including legendary soul singers Lee Fields and Sunny Ozuna from the Sunliner band. From 2009 to 2013, JJ was the executive producer of the documentary program The South Texas Jazz Project. Since 2013, he has been the general manager of the radio station, managing all aspects of the operation from programming to finance.

JJ is a graduate of the University of the Incarnate Word with a Bachelor’s degree in cultural studies and philosophy, and also has a degree in music business from San Antonio College. He committed most of his undergraduate studies to researching, writing, and lecturing on soul music, disco, jazz, and dance culture. Currently, he is enrolled at UIW pursuing a Master’s degree in communication arts.
